World Suicide Prevention Day 10th September 2023 - Creating Hope Through Action in Derby and Derbyshire.

The 10th September each year marks World Suicide Prevention Day is 10th September. It enables broader awareness about suicide prevention and this year in Derbyshire we are continuing to "Create Hope Through Action".

Why is Suicide Prevention important?
• Suicide is not inevitable
• Each year in Derby and Derbyshire there are around 100 deaths from suicide
• Three quarters of deaths by suicide in the UK are males
• Each suicide can affect around 115 people

Everyone can play a role in suicide prevention.

How can I help?

Training
• We encourage everyone to complete the Zero Suicide Alliance e-learning, It's free and only takes 20 minutes - https://bit.ly/ZSASPTraining

• Suicide Awareness and Managing Mental Health Conversations. Free training for voluntary and public sector staff and volunteers which helps people respond to others in need and gives them confidence to offer effective support. Further information: www.derbyshire.gov.uk/mentalhealthtraining

• We have commissioned the Lions Barber Collective to deliver online training (via Zoom) for hairdressers, barbers and beauty professionals in Derbyshire County so that they can help to support their customers' mental wellbeing. Below are two dates professionals can access this free training.

Events
Volunteers are speaking with fans and handing out resources at several football matches across the county. These are Glossop North End on 26th August, Belper Town on 2nd September, Chesterfield FC on 9th September, Matlock Town on 23rd September, Alfreton Town on 7th October and Buxton Town on 14th October.


The Derbyshire Suicide Prevention Programme will be holding suicide prevention roadshow stalls at
• Ilkeston Hospital Tuesday 5th Sept 9-12
• Royal Derby Hospital Tuesday 5th Sept 1-4
• Chesterfield Royal Hospital Wednesday 6th Sept 10-3
• Buxton Hospital Wednesday 11th Sept 9-12
• Walton Hospital Wednesday 11th Sept 1-3


Community Baton of Hope event - Glossop

A community event is being held in Norfolk Square, Glossop on 16th September, 10 am – 2 pm. We are linking with local partners including Mentell, Derbyshire Fire and Rescue, Derbyshire SOBs, Rethink and the Derbyshire Suicide Prevention Programme to speak with people, offer support and raise awareness. We have all day draft events, a singing workshops, youth and adult choirs as well as a live podcast. Please come along if you're in the area.

Support

Mentell provide peer support circles for men aged 18+ to talk in a safe and confidential space, free from advice and judgement. It's easy and free to access.
Many pubs and businesses in Derbyshire have 'turned blue' in support.
